Officer Training Wing

The Officer Training Wing (OTW) conducts the following officer career courses: Direct Entry Officer’s Course (DEOC), Junior Staff Officer’s Course (JSOC) and Senior Tactics Course (STC). OTW on average can conduct two (2) courses per year.

DIRECT ENTRY OFFICER’S COURSE (DEOC)

The Direct Entry Officer’s Course (DEOC) is run by the Officer Training Wing at JFA for civilians who have been selected to enlist into the PNGDF as specialist officers in various streams lacking military expertise.

The aim of this course is to prepare the newly commissioned direct entry officers to be competent in performing specialist tasks that the PNGDF lacks the expertise in while at the same time give an insight on how the PNGDF General Service Officers (GSOs) operate both in conflict and peace time situations.

The DEOC is conducted over a period of nine (9) weeks with emphasis on staff duties, military skills and personnel administration, the DEO course also includes a basic overview of the warfighting and operational planning modules to enhance trainees’ understanding and ability if involved in combat operations or planning.

JUNIOR STAFF OFFICER’S COURSE (JSOC)

JSOC is designed to draw up on experience of Lieutenants in the areas of command, leadership, management, and training. The course will prepare them for duties and functions as a Captain in the PNGDF in roles such as sub-unit second in command (2IC), Staff Officer Grade 3, or a Captain in a Unit formation.

The aim of the course is to develop the officers to participate effectively as a Captain in a command or staff team.

The Junior Staff Officer Course is conducted over a period of nine (9) weeks and covers four main areas; Communications and Problem Solving, Systems Administration and Management, Leadership; and Operations.

SENIOR TACTICS COURSE (STC)

STC is the premier course conducted by the PNGDF. It is designed to draw up on experience of Captains in the areas of command, leadership, management, and training. The course will prepare them for duties and functions as a Major in the PNGDF in roles such as sub-unit commanders, Staff Officer Grade 2, or a Major in a Unit formation.

The aim of the course is to develop the officers to participate effectively as a Major in command or a staff team.

The Senior Tactics Course is conducted over a period of six (6) weeks and covers critical thinking, staff duties, leadership, and operations.

The Senior Tactics course is a prerequisite for officers to attend Command and Staff College.
